Christmas presents under the tree

2023 was always set to be a bumper year for new product releases. Naim launching their 200 and 300 New Classic Series, the utterly mesmerising Magico S3 2023 were on order and due in the spring. Whilst there were also dark horses that came out of nowhere, like the Rega P3 50th Anniversary.

So we thought it might be fun for each of us to pick out the new product we have most enjoyed this year, and there were quite a few to choose from. So in no particular order:

Hana Umami Blue – Japanese Master Craftsmanship
Ben’s choice

Ben’s pick is the Hana Umami Blue, as he continues to explore getting back into Vinyl. Hana cartridges are the result of over 50 years expertise from the master cartridge maker Masao Okada-san, and we have been really pleased with customer feedback across all models in their range, several reviews can be read here on our website.

The hana gives a high level of detail together with a classic vinyl presentation which is very rarely achievable at this price point.

The Engstrom ARNE – HiFi+ Product of the Year
Graeme’s choice

OK so yes it’s the Hi-Fi+ 2023 product of the year, but we also happen to LOVE the Engstrom ARNE integrated, and it takes pride of place in our new ‘valve room’ opening next month. A 300B amplifier which redefines the performance capabilities of this legendary amplifier design.

We are amazed at the grip and control from just 30 watts. Don’t let anyone tell you 300B’s are only for intimate jazz – nonsense!

Graeme

Having experienced Engstrom with Shunyata at both the UK Audio Show and Ascot, the thing that impressed us most is how the “same” sound was achieved in two very different rooms. It’s not to say they were identical but the weight, tonality and emotional connection were seemingly so similar in almost unerring fashion. Hats off to Mr Guillaume Boyer for putting on such a show (twice!) and for supporting us to build a superb demonstration profile.

We have the ARNE on permanent demonstration in the stunning tactile white finish. Our particular example has the Takatsuki 300B’s, Graeme’s tube of choice having owned several pairs over the years!

Naim NAP 350 Monos sitting in Fraim – lovely
My choice

For me, I really have enjoyed the new Naim Classic series, and if I had to pick one standout component, it would be the new NAP 350s. They just have that grip and drive that Naim have built their reputation on, and whilst still a considerable investment, these offer exceptional performance for the money. We are still trying to find enough time to try them in an active setup…..hopefully in the New Year.

Summing up

If I’m honest, there are a host of amazing products we could have featured here, including a few recent additions that we haven’t even been able to unbox yet – like today our new Wilson Benesch Resolution 3Zero were delivered by Luke Milnes of Wilson Benesch. They look utterly incredible and we can’t wait to have them run in!

Between us, we can’t remember a better time to upgrade your Hi-fi system, there really is great choice and performance whatever price point you are aiming for.
